The biggest conflict almost 70 years ago still holds huge impact to today’s international relation. The World War II is the most destructive conflict in history with the number of casualties to millions. The war was the continuation of the World War I. However, it happened to be in larger scale. It didn’t involve only countries in Europe but other countries in the world.
People were suffered throughout the war and that’s why it was hard for them to just forget the biggest war in the planet especially because the impact still very much attached to today’s international relation. The World War II ended in 1945 after the United States dropped atomic bombs to two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan officially surrendered on September 2, 1945 and that’s the end of the war.
End of World War II
As the war ended, people are still afraid of the war to continue. That’s why many countries agreed to form the United Nations to maintain world peace. It came to existence officially on October 24, 1945. The permanent members of the UN’s Security Council at that time were the United Kingdom, China, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States. They remain as the permanent members to the present. Meanwhile, Germany had been de facto divided after the war ended. They were divided into the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic.
It was quite hard to estimate the specific number of casualties of the World War II because of many unrecorded deaths. It was reported that more than 60 millions lives lost in the war in which 20 million of them are military personnel and 40 million of them are civilians.
The World War II remains as the biggest and most destructive war in history. The causes of civilians’ death were mostly due to massacres, genocide, starvation, mass-bombings, and diseases.
It was estimated that around 85% of deaths of World War II were on the Allied side. They were mostly from China and Soviet. Japanese occupation forces also caused of many deaths in Asia, approximately around 3 millions. And ore than 10 millions of deaths in Pacific.
There were so many casualties of axis forces as well. They employed biological and chemical weapons to use during the invasion in various countries. The weapons were tested against civilians and prisoners of war sometimes. The World War II is something unforgettable and traumatizing for people around the world until now.
